Laminated Tote Bag Free Project
Create a quick and easy laminated tote that's sure to be a hit. Fill the tote with other fun gifts for an extra surprise.
From the laminated cotton, cut two 18"x19" rectangles for the tote and two 2 1/2"x22" strips for the straps.
From the cotton, cut two 18"x19" rectangles for the lining.
From the interfacing, cut two 18"x19" rectangles.
Use 1/2" seam allowances. The finished tote measures 5"x13"x17".
With right sides together, stitch the tote rectangles along one short edge and both long edges. Press open the seams using a press cloth.
To box the corners, align one side seam with the lower-edge seam. Measure 5" below the corner; mark a horizontal line using a removable fabric marker. Stitch along the line. Trim off the corner.
Repeat to box the remaining corner. Turn the bag right side out.
Fuse the interfacing rectangles to the lining rectangle wrong sides, following the manufacturer's instructions.
With right sides together, stitch the lining rectangles along one short edge and both long edges, leaving a 6" opening along the short edge for turning. Press open the seams. Don't turn the lining right side out. Box the lining corners, following the tote instructions.
Position one strap right side down on a flat work surface. Position one 22"-long fusible web tape piece along one strip long edge on the wrong side; press using a press cloth. Repeat to adhere a second fusible web tape piece to the opposite long edge. Remove the paper backing, and then fold the strip long edges toward the center; press using a press cloth to adhere.
Fold the strip in half length wise; topstitch the long edges. Repeat to stitch the remaining strap.
With raw edges aligned and right sides together, position each strap end 5" from each side seam along one tote side; baste. Repeat to baste the remaining strap to the opposite tote side.
Place the tote inside the lining with right sides together, matching the side seams and upper edges. Pin, and then stitch the upper edge.
Turn the tote right side out through the lining opening. Slipstitch the lining opening closed. Push the lining into the tote. Finger-press the upper edge, and then topstitch 1/2" from the upper edge.
