Summer Slumber PJ's

Create a pair of lightweight summer pajamas in a pretty crêpe de chine.

There is nothing like a set of nice, light, comfy pajamas to lounge around in on a hot summer night. The problem, though, is that sometimes the light, breezy fabric you want to use can be tricky to sew. We've got you covered. In this article, you'll learn:

  • How to cut, sew & hem lightweight fabrics
  • The best way to work with bias-cut lightweight fabric
  • How to stitch a French seam along the crotch
  • How to create a drawstring opening on a very fine, non-interfaced waistband.

***Due to an oversight, several pattern pieces are missing from this pattern. We're working to get an updated pattern up as soon as possible, but in the meantime, please use the guidance below to cut the missing pieces.
1. Waistband: Measure the upper edge (waist) of the shorts pattern piece for the size you are making, multiply by 2 and subtract 1". Record this number as the waistband length. Cut a rectangle with the grain running lengthwise that measures 2 1/4" x the waistband length.
2. Waistband center: Cut a 2 1/4" square on the grain.
3. Drawstring: cut a 1" strip on the grain that measures the waistband length plus 20". That will give you 10" on each end for the tie before drawing the shorts in; adjust if desired to your preference.
4. Neckline and armhole binding: Cut enough 1" bias strips to cover the three areas that need to be bound. The exact amount will vary by size, but 80" should be enough. Stitch the strips together at a 45 degree angle using a 1/4" seam allowance to get the length you need. ***
