Go Boho Free Lantern Sewing Project |

Use these free sewing project instructions to sew unique decor. Decorate for a fall fete with a festive bohemian-inspired embellished lantern.
Supplies
Prepare
Cut a 27" square from the organza. Vertically fold the square in quarters; pin to secure the layers. Designate one short edge as the lower edge. Mark the lower-edge center, and then mark each side 5" from the lower edge. Connect the center mark to each side mark to create a V shape. Cut along the lines through all layers (1). Unpin and unfold the fabric.
Embellish
Draw five evenly spaced 1 1/4"-diameter circles along the fabric horizontal center. Cut out the circles.
To stabilize the fabric and protect the work surface, fuse the freezer paper waxy side to the fabric wrong side using a warm iron.
On the fabric, draw a horizontal line 3 1/2" above the circles. Draw a line 2" above and parallel to the first horizontal line, and then draw a line 1/2" within each horizontal line to mark the painting guidelines. Repeat to mark painting guidelines 3 1/2" below the circles (2).

Using a flat paintbrush, fill each 1/2" horizontal line with teal glitter paint, and then fill in each center horizontal line with silver glitter paint. Refer to the photo at TK for color and design placement.
Using purple glitter paint and the flat paintbrush, paint a 1/2"-wide line around each circle perimeter. Paint a 1/2"-wide purple line above the fabric lower edge. Allow the paint to dry, and then repeat if desired for more coverage.
Center a stencil over the left lower V-shaped fabric section. Using an angled paintbrush and orange fabric paint, fill the stencil, and then remove. Repeat to stencil a flower or medallion on each remaining V-shaped section, alternating the hot pink and orange fabric paint. Allow the paint to dry.
Using the heat-setting tool, adhere crystals over the flower or medallion designs in a random pattern, following the manufacturer's instructions. Refer to the photo at TK for placement inspiration.
Remove the freezer paper from the fabric.
Construct
With right sides up, pin the boning along the fabric upper edge. Stitch along the boning upper edge using a zipper foot. Double-fold the fabric upper edge toward the wrong side, completely encasing the boning. Topstitch along each fold.
Push 1 1/4" of the boning plastic beyond one boning short end; trim to allow for stitching the lantern back seam.
Stitch a French seam to enclose the lantern back seam raw edges. Fold the fabric in half lengthwise with wrong sides together. Stitch the long open edge using a 1/4" seam allowance; press open, and then trim the seam allowance to 1/8". Turn the fabric wrong side out, and then stitch the seam again using a 1/4" seam allowance, enclosing the previous seam allowance.
Cut the ribbon in half widthwise. Thread the ribbons through the D-ring, evenly aligning the ribbon ends. Tightly wrap Perle cotton or embroidery floss several times around the ribbons just below the D-ring; tie off.
Turn the lantern right side out, and then quarter-mark the upper edge using pins. Align one ribbon end with each pin-mark on the lantern right side, lapping the ribbon end 3/8" over the lantern upper edge. Stitch each ribbon end in place.
Finish
Position the 1/2"-wide trim or ribbon along the lantern right-side upper edge, aligning the trim ends with the lantern seam. Adhere the trim using permanent fabric tape, following the manufacturer's instructions.
Evenly position the square mirrors along the silver painted lines. Adhere the mirrors with permanent fabric tape, following the manufacturer's instructions.
