project sneak peek

Hi Everyone!

I’ve been working on a project for an issue of Creative Machine Embroidery, and I thought I’d share some preliminary photos here with the Sew News community. Let me know your thoughts. It will appear in the September/October 2009 issue of CME, which hits newsstands on August 18, but the Maggie Mae embroidery designs are available on right now and they’re so adorable that I had to share the project early.

The project is a pet pillow made of fleece, with piping around the edges and designs embroidered at each corner. The pillow is definitely for those pets who love luxury! It’s so soft and  cuddly, and yet it’s stylish and decorative. Here’s a photo of one fabric corner hooped with tear-away stabilizer under the fabric and a clear topper over the fabric to prevent the stitches from sinking into the fabric pile.

hooped fabric

After embroidering each corner, I tore away most of the stabilizer and topper and washed away the excess topper using a damp washcloth.

Tearing away topper

I added a zipper along the coordinating cotton fabric center and added piping to the outer edges.

Adding zipper

I stitched the front to the back with right sides facing, and then turned the pillowcase right side out through the zipper.

Inserting pillow form

Then I inserted the pillow form and zipped up the zipper! Without taking into account the embroidery time (each corner design took over 30 minutes to stitch out), the pillow took less than an hour to construct. It fits a 30″-square pillow form (perfect for a small dog or cat). And you’ll have to look for the Sept/Oct issue of CME to see the finished product!

I’ll be sharing some project teasers for Sew News issues on the CME blog, so take a look at the editor’s blog at from time to time.

Drop me a line, or comment on this message board, and let me know what you think of my pet pillow project!
