Thanks to everyone for participating in yesterday’s giveaway, and congrats to our winner, Jeny! All of you had such fantastic ideas and tips for sewing green. What a resourceful group of sewists! Here’s Jeny’s response:
“I love making things from old felted wool sweaters. I use remnants for projects. I save scraps for projects. And when I recently made the girls some summer outfits, I had pinked the seams and let the edges fall into the trash can. My husband saw piles of pinked seam edges in the trash, and said “You’re not going to throw that away, are you?” I fished them out and tied a group of them onto a hair elastic for a cute hair ornament that the girls loved, and that matched their outfits.”
Today, we have the very helpful and handy Illustrated Guide to Sewing Home Furnishings (Fox Chapel Publishing) to give away to one lucky commenter.
To enter, just answer this question: What home-dec projects and techniques would you like to see in Sew News? Check back tomorrow to find out Day 5′s winner and the question and prize for Day 6!
Hi, I won the book about Green Dresses, but I haven’t received it yet. Just wondering if there was a glitch or something! Thanks for all you do!
Hi Jeny,
I’ll find out when your prize was sent out. Sorry for the delay!

I would like to see sewing room decor, machine covers and oranizing items.
I’m always looking for good storage ideas…..I think I have it all organized and then can’t find things because I’ve got a mess all around again!!
another suggestion is for ‘quick change for the season’ ideas that can be made from mystash of seasonal fabrics…..
I’d love to see ideas on how to measure and make patterns for odd shaped items. For example, I have a great birdcage for my cockatiel and plan to make a cover for it. Tips and tricks that help to measure, add seam allowances, and crafting a pattern would be great!
I like to see more dress making, also odd things like cover fabric over shoes.
I would love to see some upholstery techniques, i.e. cushions, simple chairs, etc. Also, lined curtains/drapes for energy savings.
I live in a very small one bedroom apartment and like everyone, no matter how big their house is I have a storage problem. I have 2 sewing machines, a surger and an embrodery machine and tons of stuff to go along with them. I would love to see a system of storage ideas that would look good and be organized enough that I can find what I need.
I would like to see easy ways to make valances & cornice covers. To know how to measure so that the proportions are proper. Sometimes things look off & you want to make them look right.
Window treatments, hotpads, etc. Smaller, easier projects as well. Fun projects for kids too…maybe something Mom and daughter can do together…
I would like to see something on organizing the sewing and crafts room or area.
Organization and storage projects, please!
Thread, needles and fabric choices for covering chairs & sofas.
I would love to see romantic decorating items!
Whoa, I just saw that I won yesterday! Thank you so much! I love your magazine and blog!
I’d like to see some ideas for pillow casings with different closures for different purposes or ease of maintenance: zippers, velcro, buttons, what is best for which fabric?
Like so many others, I’d also love more ideas to sew things to help organize, especially for organizing all of my sewing and crafting supplies!
How to have a put together space but have it still be liveable. Its great to see these beautiful rooms, but I have 2 kids, 2 dogs, 2 cats and a husband – our house is a home, but I would love to still be able to have it look nice!
I would like to more children’s toys and stuffed animals. Sewing with faux fur and fleece.
I would love to see how to make fitted slip covers for my furniture. I have in my mind to change it every season. (will that really happen I don’t know but I like the thought). Actually we could do that with anything we sew. I would love to see seasonal change ideas.
I would like to see an article with techniques for slipcovering upholstered furniture, fitting, finishing and crucial measurements. Maybe the book already “covers” this so you could just send me that, lol. Thank you
I’d like to see some techniques for making insulated drapes to seal out the cold of our R3 windows.
I would like to see more children’s items, such as creative bibs and bags.
Storage ideas and sewing room organizer ideas.
I’d love to see more ideas for kitchens, including covers for small appliances, as well as more sewing room organization ideas. There’s never enough room!
I would love to see window blinds, shades, etc.
I would love to see more ideas for organization in the home. Also more ideas for using fabric in the home, other than pillows and curtains.
I would like to see coordinated room ideas. Sewing for formal looks, sewing for casual looks. Sometimes I’m not sure what project would be a good idea for the style room I have. And small projects that coordinate make a room really pop.
Would love to sew organizers. I have a pattern for wrapping paper rolls. What other kind of organizers can be sewn? Say, coupon organizer/wallet, crochet hook organizer/storage… I’m sure others can think up more stuff
I would love to see more ideas for sewing room storage and kitchen and bathroom decor!
I’d like to see more window treatments.
I would love to see easy to make throws and lamp shades.
All the tassels and lace often looks very interesting to add to pillows, curtains and other things, but often the information to add this on, is sketchy in the instructions. Could there be more explanations? ie. how to line it up, how to end and start the ribbons, lace, etc to still make anything homemade still look professional.
I would love to see some fabric storage ideas for the sewing room and bathroom and some table runner ideas, and kitchen linens and ect.
I would love to see more home decor items for the kitchen, and bedrooms in sew news
