Bags make great sewing projects because they can be as simple or complicated as you want. It’s also fun to make something wearable that doesn’t need to be fitted and altered. In fact, we love sewing bags so much here at Sew News, that we released an entire book devoted to them! There are so many types of bags to sew, all useful in their own right: satchels, clutches, grocery bags, totes, backpacks…the list goes on and on. So, to celebrate bag-making, we’re giving away Bags in Bloom: Create 20 Unique Flower Purses with Simple Embroidered Stitches and Easy-to-Sew Patterns by Susan Cariello (Watson-Guptill Publications) for Day 9 of our 12 Days of Giveaways. To enter for a chance to win this book, answer this question in the Comments section below: What is your favorite type of bag to sew? Leave your comment by tomorrow when we’ll announce the winner! Good luck!

My favorite bags to sew are usually made out of recycled clothes. Purses out of old jeans is one I really love to do
I have made all types of bags and love the fact that each is original. I have made up my own patterns for almost every type of bag imaginable, sometimes just so I can use a particular piece of fabric. Thank you for a chance to win this terrific book!
Love to sew bags. And to embellish them even more. Flowers would be a great way embellish them even more. This book would help me in learning how to do more!
A yoga mat bag, or a reusable grocery bag because they make fun, functional gifts!
I love to sew market bags besides being great for the environment i have a big canvas to create anything i want on. Have fun showing them off when you shop.
I have yet to sew a bag, but did help my niece sew her first project…a messenger bag. I’m trying to find one I like that has a zipper.
My favorite is a purse I made to try crazy patch. I loved the crazy patch and the purse but it’s too small! I put my stuff in it to put inside the purse I’m using. It makes it very easy to change purses and is very light weight – all I have to do is lift it out and put it into another purse. Turned out to be something better than I had planned.

I love to make zippered pouches/wristlets. I like to make tote bags too!! You can never have too many purses!!!
Love ‘em all. But I guess I would have to say, tote bags. I just finished a sweet little purse for a three year old. It was formally the bottom 7″ of a pair of cast off jeans. The fabric used for the lining and decorative pockets is bright orange and blue fabric.
I enjoy making bags of all kinds..I have a leather one that I made myself and I have really enjoyed it..I make and sale bags of all kinds..I also have some that I have made out of old cowboy boots that were my husbands..
Bags of all types are the best fahion statements. By taking draperies from second hand stores, they can be remade into recycled green bags. Using leftover upholstery books make dramatic bags. Finally, each person can make one for every season and every dress occasion. But my favorite bags are the ones lined with love.
Bags are so fun! Small hand bags are fun and I’ve taught my kids how to make them in an afternoon. Tote bags for summer and grocery size bags are fun to create and make your own.
I love to make bags for little girls. From ballet bags, skating bags to library bags. I love to match the embroidery to the fabric.
I haven’t sewn any bags yet, but did just buy a pattern for a potato chip bag, so we will see how that turns out. Not sure why its called a potato chip bag, other than the pattern says, bet you can’t make just one . . .
I don’t have a particular favorite. I am making a tote bag with my quilt group right now. It will be used to haul stuff around for the quilt group. I also like making shopping bags. They are so different than what other shopping bags look like. I need a knitting bag now because I am teaching myself to knit. The pink one on the cover of this book would be perfect!
Totes out of other fabrics, “reusable” !
I like to make all different types of bags and am always looking for new styles and ideas on how to make them better or how to add new details. I would love to receive this book.
Love them all….I have lots of people who would like there as gifts!!
Bags are great gifts – one of my favorite quick sew projects.
I love them all, but I don’t like to make the same one twice (boring!). I’ve made lots of diaper bags and love making tote bags, too. But now I’m getting into making smaller more detailed bags. The best part, though, is seeing everyone’s faces when they open their gift………..LOVE giving heart-made gifts!
My favorite bags to make are med size tote bags. I use totes for evrything, a work tote, a book tote, and a sewing tote. I also make totes for my granddaughters and my Daughter-in-law. I even made very big bags for the kids out of Christmas fabric and put all their gifts in the bag together.
Bags…bags are great! A “girl” can never have too many, and when you make your own it’s even better!!!
I really enjoy the challenge of trying to copy name-brand bags!
I make all kinds of bags – I’m going to be trying some “harder” handbags/purses in the new year. I love trying new patterns, but have done a few patterns multiple times.
Purses are my absolute favourite to make, (no one has enough purses), but at the same time, when we are now in the recycling world, tote bags, grocery bags and school bags can all be used many times over and over again.
I love to sew grocery totes & then hand paint them individually.
I make all kinds of bags from totes to evening purses. They’re all fun and I enjoy the challenge of many different small projects.
I’ve been sewing all types of bags recently. Two requirements: LOTS of room and POCKETS!
I love purses! I make quilted ones, zippered ones, ones with matching wallets and coin purses. I make wine bottle bags, tote bags. I reuse old jeans to make bags. I love to make any kind of bags.
I’ve made a few zippered pouches and a few totes – they are such fun projects to make. I would like to try other bags and this book would be perfect! Thanks for the chance!!
I would like to make totes for my granddaughter to match outfits. She is seven and loves anything Nana makes for her. I have made coin purses with added cross stitch embellishment. Can I learn to make some more?!
I enjoy making all sorts of bags, grocery, totes, zipper bags, and of course, purses of all kinds. I love the way you can let your imagination fly in bags!
I don’t have a favorite I love to sew all kinds of bags
I love to make purses, totes, and travel pouches …I’ve been using drapery and upholstery samples. They come out beautiful!
I love to sew gift bags and purses. Everyone loves a handmade gift bag.
I love to make any different kind of bags. For now on I’m making cute little pleated pouches and wristlet. They are fun!!
Lolo:)
Totes. I love totes! I use them for everything. I need lots of bags tho.

My favorite bag to sew is any new bag pattern that I can whip up as gifts for my friends or family either as the gift alone or containing a book, beach towel, baking, new sweater, or baby blanket, etc.
i love to sew bags with hidden zipper pockets that can be slung across the body over the shoulder
