Sew An Easy Market Tote Bag

SN 500 Square Tutorial Logo 300x300 Sew An Easy Market Tote Bag

What person doesn’t need another tote bag? I haul my knitting in one, notebooks, and things I think I can’t live without in another. Give one to the kids to keep all their little things in for car trips and on and on. I’ve forgotten now, but I needed to make a tote bag for something, maybe my lunch. Perfect timing, we got this amazing fabric in from Westminster Fibers and it was screaming to be made into something quick and useful.  You can find all the designs from the Eclectic Elements line on the Coats & Clark website plus where to purchase HERE.  Check out the designer Tim Holtz and see his inspiration for the Eclectic Elements line HERE.

  • Cut 2 pieces 14″x14″ for the outside.
  • Cut 2 pieces 14″x14″ for the lining.

Back stitch at the top and bottom of seam. Stitch the bottom seam if you have not cut yours of the fold. Repeat for the lining.

To box the lower corners, fold each corner flat, aligning the side and lower seams. Draw a line across the corner 1 1/4” from the point. Stitch along the line, and then trim the seam allowance to 1/4”. Repeat on all corners for the outer bag and the lining.

Sew around the bag at the upper edge, leaving open a space of 3-4″. This space is where you will turn the bag right side out. After sewing, push all fabric through the opening left after stitching the upper edge. The bag should now look something like this. Stuff the lining into the bag. Top stitch around the entire bag.
