Hopefully you have had a chance to cut out  your  fabric, apply the interfacing and take a look at the instructions. This is a bag that goes together quickly and easily.

Begin by sewing 2 rows of gathering stitches into the top of the exterior panels. Set the exterior panel aside for now.

Fold the handles in half lengthwise and sew them together with a 1/2″ seam allowance. Remember, all seam allowances on this bag are 1/2″.

Once you have sewn both handles, clip along the curved edge. This will allow the handle to lay smoothly once it is turned. Beautiful Belle Handbag Sew Along Week 3! To turn the handles, simply use a safety pin and push one end through to the other.

Press the seams flat.

On either side of the handle stitch 1/4″ away from the edge.

Once the stitching is finished, fold the handle in half and find the center. Place a pin at that point.

Measure 2″ on either side of the center and place a pin at these points. Fold the handle in half lengthwise and stitch from one pin to the other. This will form the grip and make the bag quite comfortable to carry in your hand. Set the handles aside for now.

Beautiful Belle Handbag Sew Along Week 3! Once the edge stitch has been completed, fold the pocket panel at the seam edge, wrong sides of the fabric will be facing each other. Edge stitch the top side of the fabric.

Beautiful Belle Handbag Sew Along Week 3! Once I have completed the first line of stitching, I like to do 1 more. It will look lovely and give the edge of the pocket panels a little more stability.

Beautiful Belle Handbag Sew Along Week 3! Once you have sewn both of the pocket panels together, place them on top of the lining panels.

Beautiful Belle Handbag Sew Along Week 3! Determine the amount of pockets that you would like to have. Draw the lines in with a marking pencil and then stitch the pocket panels to the lining panels. Rather than just one row of stitching, I like to do 2 rows. I think it gives the pockets a little nicer look.

Now take the cell phone pocket, fold it in half with right sides together. Stitch around, leaving an opening in the bottom for turning.

Beautiful Belle Handbag Sew Along Week 3! Once the stitching is complete, trim the seam allowance and clip the corners.

Beautiful Belle Handbag Sew Along Week 3! Turn the pocket to the right side and press. Determine where you would like to place your cell phone pocket. I like having mine over to one side. I simply folded the edge of my pocket panel back and stitched my cell phone pocket in place.

Beautiful Belle Handbag Sew Along Week 3! Stitch the pocket right along the edge and then do a second row of stitching about 1/8″ away from the first row of stitching. This will help to keep the pocket nice and secure through the repeated use of using your cell phone.

Beautiful Belle Handbag Sew Along Week 3! Baste the edges of the pocket panels to the edge of the lining panels. I put my scissors in the pockets so you could see the pockets.

Beautiful Belle Handbag Sew Along Week 3! Now, match right sides together and sew the lining panels together. Remember to leave an opening in the bottom in order to be able to turn the bag once you have sewn the lining to the exterior of the bag. Your opening should be from 4″ to 8″ wide depending upon the thickness of your fabric. Beautiful Belle Handbag Sew Along Week 3!

If you would like to add a magnetic closure to your bag, now is the time to do so. I like to reinforce the area where the closure will be. This is quite easy to do. Just cut a small square of interfacing and iron it in the area where the closure will be.

Untitled 7 Beautiful Belle Handbag Sew Along Week 3! Take the exterior panels and draw up the gathering stitches. Use the top edge of the lining panel to determine the amount of gathering that you will need.

Beautiful Belle Handbag Sew Along Week 3! Once the gathering stitches have been pulled the amount needed, pin the handles to the top of the bag. Be sure to pay close attention to how you are placing the handles on the bag. The points should go towards the center. It seems a bit strange now, but once the bag is turned, it will all make sense.

Once the handles have been attached to the bag, match the right side of the exterior of the bag to the right side of the lining.

Untitled 9 Beautiful Belle Handbag Sew Along Week 3! Then sew from the dot to the dot along the opposite side. Do the same on the other side of the bag.

Next week we will turn and finish the bag.

I think that once you’ve finished one bag, more will be in your future!!!

Hope you are enjoying the sew along!

  1. Sherry Kelly says:

How can I find out what fabric is used for the beautiful belle bag that is pictured in the Sew News magazine, February/March edition?

  2. Rhonda Buss says:

Hi Sherry, I bought the fabric for the original bag at a local shop here in Chicago called The Needle Shop. Here is a link to the online shop and the fabric, http://www.theneedleshop.net/collections/all-fabric/products/home-decor-fabric-30 It’s a great print and the fabric was really easy to work with. Good luck!

Hi Rhonda, FINALLY gettin to my bag! Pattern came by pony express :) .
I have magnetic enclosures that have their own backing to sew in. I think I just sew around the perimeter? ( 1st time using) They seem to be a bit wieghty. I am using a quilters cotton for interior. Should I interface the whole interior?
I am so happy with your videos. Makes all so much clearer when you are talking me through the project.
