Amy Butler Beautiful Belle Sew Along Week 3
Hopefully you have had a chance to cut out your fabric, apply the interfacing and take a look at the instructions. This is a bag that goes together quickly and easily.
Begin by sewing 2 rows of gathering stitches into the top of the exterior panels. Set the exterior panel aside for now.
Fold the handles in half lengthwise and sew them together with a 1/2″ seam allowance. Remember, all seam allowances on this bag are 1/2″.
Once you have sewn both handles, clip along the curved edge. This will allow the handle to lay smoothly once it is turned. To turn the handles, simply use a safety pin and push one end through to the other.
Press the seams flat.
On either side of the handle stitch 1/4″ away from the edge.
Once the stitching is finished, fold the handle in half and find the center. Place a pin at that point.
Measure 2″ on either side of the center and place a pin at these points. Fold the handle in half lengthwise and stitch from one pin to the other. This will form the grip and make the bag quite comfortable to carry in your hand. Set the handles aside for now.
Determine the amount of pockets that you would like to have. Draw the lines in with a marking pencil and then stitch the pocket panels to the lining panels. Rather than just one row of stitching, I like to do 2 rows. I think it gives the pockets a little nicer look.
Now take the cell phone pocket, fold it in half with right sides together. Stitch around, leaving an opening in the bottom for turning.
Turn the pocket to the right side and press. Determine where you would like to place your cell phone pocket. I like having mine over to one side. I simply folded the edge of my pocket panel back and stitched my cell phone pocket in place.
Stitch the pocket right along the edge and then do a second row of stitching about 1/8″ away from the first row of stitching. This will help to keep the pocket nice and secure through the repeated use of using your cell phone.
Now, match right sides together and sew the lining panels together. Remember to leave an opening in the bottom in order to be able to turn the bag once you have sewn the lining to the exterior of the bag. Your opening should be from 4″ to 8″ wide depending upon the thickness of your fabric.
If you would like to add a magnetic closure to your bag, now is the time to do so. I like to reinforce the area where the closure will be. This is quite easy to do. Just cut a small square of interfacing and iron it in the area where the closure will be.
Once the gathering stitches have been pulled the amount needed, pin the handles to the top of the bag. Be sure to pay close attention to how you are placing the handles on the bag. The points should go towards the center. It seems a bit strange now, but once the bag is turned, it will all make sense.
Once the handles have been attached to the bag, match the right side of the exterior of the bag to the right side of the lining.
Next week we will turn and finish the bag.
I think that once you’ve finished one bag, more will be in your future!!!
Hope you are enjoying the sew along!
