And, let us know what you thought about the sew-along. If you didn’t make it you can always sew along at any time, and if you have a question just leave it on the blog and we’ll get back to you. Thanks everyone for joining. Now, here’s Rhonda.

We’re in the final stretch! All that’s left to do is attach the side ends of the bag to the center section, attach the bottom of the bag, sew in the lining and make the shoulder strap. A snap!!

Before we attach the side ends to the center section, let’s make a couple of snips that will make matching super easy.

Prior to attaching the side pocket to the center section of the bag, we snipped in a small “v” in the pocket as well as the bag. Fold the bottom of the bag in half both lengthwise and crosswise and snip in a small “v” on all 4 sides at the center.

Fold the side end panels in half and snip a small “v” at the center top and center bottom. The center bottom “v” will match to the “v” that was just cut in the bottom panel. Portside Travel Set Sew Along Week 4 Finishing Details

The “v” that was snipped into the center top of the side end panel will match to the center of the zipper that is in the center panel of the bag.

Prior to attaching the side end panel to the center panel, clip the seams where the end panels join to the top panels.

When attaching the end panel to the center panel, remember that you are attaching a curved line to a straight line. You will need to clip the straight edge .The seam allowance is only 1/2″, so pay close attention when clipping the seam allowance.

Once the seam has been sewn, edge stitch the seam.

Now we are ready to attach the bottom of the bag. Rather than try to sew 1 continuous seam around the bottom of the bag, match the long edge of the bottom panel to the center panel of the bag. Sew from seam to seam, but do not sew over the seam allowance.

Now the center panels of the bag have been attached to the bottom panel.

In order to sew the end panels to the bottom panel, you will need to clip the seam allowance as you see below.

Once the seams have been clipped, the side panel will lay flat against the bottom panel. Sew from the clip point to the other clip point. Before sewing both ends, be sure to unzip the zipper at least a little so that you can turn the bag to the right side.

Both ends have now been sewn.

Before turning the bag to the right side, clip the seams diagonally.

The bag has been turned to the right side. In order to have the bottom seam lay flat, we will need to edge stitch the seam all the way around the bottom edge of the bag.

The edge stitching will be along the bottom of the bag.

Sew the lining together and place inside the bag. Hand stitch the lining to the zipper. In order to reinforce the straps, stitch over the “x” that was stitched to hold the handle in place. I recommend reinforcing both the handles and the webbing that was stitched to the side ends of the bag.

If you would like a stronger bottom, use 2 layers of heavy chip board. Make a sleeve for the chip board and then place it in the bottom of the bag.

The final step will be to make the shoulder strap. Cut the webbing as instructed. Slip the webbing through both rings and then stitch the webbing down with an “x” pattern.

Slip 1 of the swivel hooks though the other end of the webbing, but do not stitch in place.

Bring the opposite end of the webbing up to the rings.

Slip the webbing through both rings,

and then back through the bottom ring.

Turn under the raw edge of the webbing and stitch down in an “x” pattern. The shoulder strap is now complete and fully adjustable.

I have so enjoyed the Portside Travel Set Sew Along. Lucky me, I now have 2 to choose from! Although, Christmas is not that far away, so someone just might be getting a set for Christmas. I won’t say who!!! And then again, since the set goes together so easily and quickly, I just might give a set to everyone on my list….maybe icon smile Portside Travel Set Sew Along Week 4 Finishing Details

Hope you’ve enjoyed the sew along as much as I have. If by chance you’ve decided that you might like to make a set after all, but you have not yet purchased a pattern, the pattern is still available and you can find it HERE. This is one pattern that I think you’ll use time and time again.

So until next time,

Sew On!!!
