Are you ready to sew your Ravenna Blouse? We can’t wait to get started with our first sew along from the new April/May issue. And this blouse is a good one – the perfect wardrobe builder with style and customization options that make it so much more than basic. The creator is Kimberly Payne of Straight Stitch Designs. Going beyond basics is what drives her pattern design philosophy – and that’s why she’s one of our favorite indie pattern designers! Read below for more from Kimberly, then join us tomorrow for week 1 of the Ravenna Blouse sew along!
SN: What is your sewing background?
I was lucky enough to learn all about sewing from my mom while I was in high school. She not only taught me the basics of sewing but she did it on the sewing machine she used to make her clothes growing up. Although over the years I have sewn a little or a lot, it has been a constant in my life as a way to express my creativity.
Sewing for my kids is what finally brought me back to sewing regularly and gave me a renewed love of the art of making. Once I sewed my first piece of clothing for myself I knew it was an exciting new direction I was headed in.
SN: What’s your favorite thing about sewing?
Hands down my favorite thing about sewing is having the skills and knowledge to create clothes that actually fit my body. Clothes are created to work for the masses, so if you fall outside the range a pattern is drafted for your clothes are not going to fit well. It wasn’t until I learned more about garment sewing that I realized why pants never fit me well. By knowing how to sew, all the sudden you can create custom clothes for your body, and feel more confident in the clothes you are wearing.
SN: What do you love most about the sewing community?
The sewing community both online and in person is the most supportive and encouraging group of people I have ever come in contact with. Whether this is communicating with fellow pattern designers or sewists of all levels, everyone just wants to support you any way they can. This support can look like celebrating your accomplishments through social media or even talking shop over coffee with local sewists. What I love most about this community I have become a part of is that you have such a wealth of knowledge and inspiration at your fingertips, how can you not become a better sewist surrounded by all of these amazing people.
SN: Who do you design for?
I design for women who, like me, are looking to create a wardrobe of clothes that are comfortable for their day to day life while still looking put together. The patterns I create elevate women’s everyday ‘uniform’ from simply about comfort to style and comfort combined.
SN: What’s next for you?
Designing and drafting sewing patterns for women continues to be the main focus for me at Straight Stitch Designs. I have some really exciting summer patterns in the works that will be released in the coming months. In addition to my sewing patterns I am working on developing another course for Straight Stitch Workroom, helping my fellow DIY Creative Entrepreneurs navigate the sewing/pattern world.
Join us this month and make a Ravenna Blouse – or 7 – for your spring wardrobe!
