Favewrapdress 3 300x300 Favorite Shirt Dress Sewing PatternsIf there’s a dress style we love for its ability to transition from summer to fall, it’s the shirtdress. Inspired by the button-up shirt, modern shirtdress patterns take on a variety of forms from shifts to vintage-inspired fit-and-flare designs and everything in between. Below you’ll find our top shirtdress pattern picks.

Rosa Dress

Shirt dresses aren’t really my thing. I’m not sure why, but maybe a little part of me thinks that shirts should be shirts and dresses should be dresses. That said, though, I make an exception for the Rosa Shirt Dress from Tilly and the Buttons. I love how the princess seams give it some shape, and the back yoke is gorgeous. I have to admit, it looks a little intimidating, but I think such a cute dress would be worth it. And the blouse version is lovely, too, so it’s two great patterns in one envelope.

Unfortunately, the largest size the dress comes in is a little too small for me, which is okay because I’m pretty sure that the dress wouldn’t look that great on me anyway. My body requires a shirtdress more like the Gallery Dress from Liesl + Co.

Gallery Dress

I’ve never made this dress either, but I have made the tunic version and I love it. It’s super comfortable and cute. The placket’s easy and I really like the back pleat — it’s such a nice element. The dress version is very similar, as I recall, except it has pockets, which is always a plus in a dress. The tunic I made has a band collar, but I think I’d like to try the other collar next time, because the band collar touches the edge of my jaw, which gets irritating after a while.

Suddenly I’m feeling the urge to make a Gallery Dress. I’m starting to think that dress month is a dangerous thing!

If you’ve been around this blog long enough, you know my strong suit is NOT choosing between patterns, so today, I’ve got two picks for your perusal.

The Alder Shirtdress by Grainline Studio is a modern take on the classic button-up sleeveless shirtdress. The pattern offers two views/versions, including a straight silhouette and one with gathered side panels. At left is my straight version (version A) with some scrappy denim piecing. The main fabric is a quilting cotton. I was a bit worried about using this fabric but there’s enough swing and ease in the pattern that it works. I actually like the quilting cotton for this – the dress swings off the body a bit, making it a great pick for late summer heat. But yes, you guessed it, I’m going to have to make another!

There’s even a version with a popover collar, if you get tired from all those buttonholes. Both versions are modern and feminine without being girly…I guess that’s my schtick! Rest assured that I’ve already got fabric lined up for a dress and shirt version…or 7!

From Burdastyle.com, from left to right:
A classic style perfect for the office! The fabric tie belt cinched to a bow accentuates the waistline with a feminine touch.

This shirt dress is a trendy take on shirt dresses with its oversized shape and pleated back. Make sure to pair it with high heels!

Reminiscent of nurse dresses from the 1950s, this classic short-sleeve shirt dress is a versatile piece that can work in any wardrobe.

Like the shirtdress from our graphic? Us, too! The Darling Ranges Dress by Megan Nielsen was our recent sewalong pick and we still have a few copies of the pattern in our shop. The pattern includes a number of cool versions and design options, too!
