Instead of using a basting stitch to create ruffles, zigzag stitch on the widest setting over dental floss or cording. Push the fabric down the cording to create easy ruffles without straining your hands.
Thank you for this tip. I will use it on any gathering job from now on. We always expected wonderful tips from Sew News. I’ve been reading Sew News for many years & that’s one of the reasons I always renew my subscription. Love every edition.
yes – I would prefer the dental floss because it’s less bulky for apparel wear and lightweight home dec. For heavy apparel/home dec the thicker crochet thread would be preferable for me, as like others, it is more ‘arthritis’ friendly for me.
Have used this tip in the past. It works very well and I use it for all big gathering projects.
This is a great hint – there have been many times when my basting stitch has broken halfway through gathering a sleeve or skirt.
Great tip! I use crochet thread it’s cheaper than dental floss.
An oldy but goodie. Often the best tip!
