Project Runway, Season 16, Episode 12: There’s Snow Business like Sew Business

This week really confused me. I have no idea why the challenge was so simple: The designers were to create a winter look that any fashionista would be proud to wear in winter. That was it. Yawn. I think Heidi just wanted to have snow on the runway.

The designers were given a whopping $400 for this look and two full days! This look would decide who goes to fashion week and who gets “left in the cold.” heehee

The producers tried to build in some drama, by emphasizing that Margarita was from Puerto Rico, where there is no snow. So they painted a picture that she might have trouble with this challenge. The only trouble came when she went to Mood and tried to purchase rabbit fur for her dress. Tim told her that this was a “fur-free show,” and took away her pelts. She was devastated, as she was out of time to shop and had tons of money left now. The other designers agreed to let her shop for 5 additional minutes to replace her fur.

I just have to add that before the shopping trip, the designers were taken to the Minus 5 Ice Bar in Manhattan. They sat on ice cubes to sketch, which were covered in…fur pelts. Yes, ladies and gents…on a fur-free show!

You tell me–is that faux fur Ayana is siting on? I think not.

But let’s move on…

Ayana started creating a straight coat with a asymmetrical color-blocking and a removable lower portion. The concept was cool, and Tim helped her decide on splatter painting the pink so it flowed into the black better. Under the coat was a jumpsuit made of houndstooth print. Striking combo. The judges didn’t think it was “enough.”

Margarita started making a dress that would have faux fur sleeve accents. Tim was hating it and urged her to rethink the entire design. As a result, she made her entire dress from the faux fur, with an oversize jacket that had a great blue lining that really popped on the runway. The judges were NOT loving the dress.

Lyris (her model) seemed to absolutely hate the look. But she can sell you the phone book with her face and body language on the runway and I think she really made it work.

Brandon did something…exactly the same as he’s done the entire competition. But if it aint broke, why fix it I guess…

Kenya made the coolest coat ever. She was inspired by the fabric print and went off from there. Her model looked strong, happy and well put together. Great job, in my opinion. The pants were fabulous. But I remember something Tim said early on: “Is this fashion or are you just making clothes?” Her stuff is super wearable and sellable…so does this make her simply a good designer instead of a winner? Heidi loved the coat, hated the rest.

Kentaro took the win with his cream ensemble. I thought it was cool and good that he went back to his roots with the one-color “blandness” that got him on Project Runway to begin with. He has similar sensibilities to Brandon but I think his end result is more innovative and intriguing. I would actually want to wear it (aside from the shorts), while Brandon’s designs are a bit too “out there.”

I’m excited to see next week when Tim makes the home visits. Now he’s got to go to FIVE places instead of three. Will we actually get to see who wins next week or will it be another cliffhanger?

We know that two designers will be cut even before the runway show begins. Could you imagine doing all the work and having such high hopes only to be let down RIGHT BEFORE your big runway show? Because they still get to show, just knowing that they aren’t in the competition anymore. In fact, 10 designers show, because fashion week happens before the show ends and the producers have to keep the winner a surprise.

My prediction? Margarita and Kenya will get cut just before their show walks (sad face). Brandon, Kentaro and Ayana will be the final 3. Brandon will take home the win (another sad face), and Heidi will wear Brandon’s clothes as soon as she can get him to make her some. What are your predictions?
