Whether you celebrate Thanksgiving in a traditional or modern way, with the good china or fiesta ware, you’re likely setting a table for the feast. And even if the feast isn’t in your own home, making place cards that look like mini pilgrim hats to gift to the guests is sure to bring even more joy to the day.

Makes one pilgrim hat.
- Two 8”x10” rectangles of black fabric
- 8”x10” rectangle of paper-backed fusible web
- 2⁄3 yard of 3⁄8”-wide black ribbon
- 1 buckle
- Card stock or plain 31⁄2”x5” card
- Fabric glue
- Black all-purpose thread
Adhere the fusible web to the wrong side of one rectangle, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Remove the paper backing. Place the second rectangle wrong side over the exposed webbing; fuse.
Use the Hats off Pattern to cut one hat body and two hat brims from the fused fabric.
Thread the machine with black all-purpose thread and set it for a 2 mm-wide satin stitch. Satin stitch the inner circle of each hat brim.
Cut the slits along the hat body upper edge where indicated on the pattern. Satin stitch the hat body upper edge, stitching down each side of the slits. For extra security, stitch a bar tack at each slit point. To stitch the bar tack, stop stitching at the slit point.Widen the satin-stitch width. Take a few stitches over the slit point. Return to the narrow satin-stitch setting. Continue stitching the opposite slit side.
Right sides facing, align the hat body ends and stitch using a 1/4” seam. Trim the seam allowance close to the stitching. Turn the hat body right side out so the seam is on the inside.
Cut 1⁄2”-long slits ó” apart along the hat body unfinished edge. Fold the resulting tabs outward; finger-press.
Slide one hat brim over the hat body up to the slits. Glue the tabs to the hat brim underside; let dry.
Once the tabs are dry, apply a light bead of glue to the second hat brim. Align the second hat brim under the first brim, encasing the tabs; let dry.
To finish the hat, satin stitch along the outer circumference of the hat brim.
Cut a 7” length of 3⁄8”-wide ribbon. Thread the ribbon through the buckle. Wrap the ribbon and buckle around the lower end of the hat body. Hand tack or glue one ribbon end at the seam. Fold under the opposite ribbon end so it slightly overlaps the first ribbon end. Hand tack or glue in place.
Add a place card to the hat and put it with a place setting at your Thanksgiving table.
Repeat the instructions to make an additional hat for each guest at your Thanksgiving feast.
