There are many reasons sewists love sewing pajamas. Let us count the ways . . . and then tell you about our favorite pajamas to sew and lots of pajama patterns.

Why Sew Pajama Pants

  1. Attain maximum Zoom call comfort = party on the top, pajamas on the bottom!
  2. #secretpajamas is a thing now.
  3. Four words: matching family pajama photos. See also: matching couple pajamas and pet pajamas.
  4. Making pajamas is easy and fast. Many can be completed in one to three hours, depending on the pattern and size.
  5. Finally use up your flannel stash (cozy AND hard to resist!).
  6. Use up your fleece stash while you’re at it. Fleece PJs are sublime. Just don’t forget about good old cotton too!
  7. Wrap your loved one in handmade goodness while they rest.
  8. And yourself, too! Good pajamas = the best kind of selfcare.

Now are you convinced? Here are a few of our favorite pajama sewing patterns to stitch up.

Pajama Patterns: Pants + More

Sew a pair of pajama pants for each member of your family this year! Themed or color coordinating jammies make cute photo ops for cards, but you can also use other fabric prints: favorite sports teams, movies or TV characters are always fun!

Making elastic-waist pants is easy and can be completed in one to three hours, depending on the pattern and size. Pair the pants with a purchased matching T-shirt or cami and the gift is complete. Or, start a new tradition with your besties and have a PJ making party!

Full-Length PJ Pants

There’s no substitute for me-made when it comes to full-length pajama pants to sew. It’s just so much more comfortable and flattering to have your pants at exactly the right length! Sew them in a lightweight fabric for multi-season wear, or choose a cozy fabric like fleece.

While any elastic-waist pant could theoretically be made into pajamas — see this recent post where Meg turned the business-casual Tremblant Pants from Capsule Studio: Plush into a pair of comfy sweatpants! — these patterns are tried-and-true.

Loveland Leggings by Matthew Meredith
