MATERIALS Poplin fabric: 3/4 yard of white; 1/2 yard of
black; 1 1/4 yard of red
1/2 yard of black-and-white print fabric
1 yard of 1"-thick batting
1/8 yard of fusible transfer web
Matching threads
CONSTRUCTION Note: Stitch right sides together using 1/4" seam allowances unless otherwise
noted; press the seam allowances open.
Cut three 3"x18" strips each from the black and white fabrics.
Stitch the strips together lengthwise, alternating colors.
Mark and cut the pieced fabric into six 3"-wide strips (Figure 1). Note: A rotary cutter and ruler work well for this task.
Stitch the strips together again, alternating black and white to create a checkerboard pattern (Figure 2).
Cut two 3 1/2"xl5 1/2" strips and two 10"x22" strips from the white fabric.
Stitch the 15 1/2"-long pieces to the upper and lower edges of the completed checkerboard, aligning edges. Stitch the 22"-long strips to each center section side (Figure 3).
Cut four 2 3/4"x35" strips from the black fabric. Cut four 2 3/4"x35" strips from the white fabric.
Stitch a black strip to each side of a white strip; repeat for the remaining strips. Stitch the striped sections to the center section upper and lower edges (Figure 4).
Cut two 7"x35" sections from the print fabric. Stitch the print strips to the stripe sections, aligning edges (Figure 5).
Cut a 35"x50" rectangle each from the batting and red fabric.
Using a can or glass as a template, cut six 3"-diameter circles each from the remaining red fabric and the fusible transfer web. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to fuse the web to the circle wrong sides; remove the paper backing.
Place the circles on the mat following Figure 6, centering the first circle 2 1/2" from the checkerboard center edge and the remaining circles 3" from the center circle. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to fuse the circles in place. Using a medium width zigzag and red thread, satin stitch the circle outer edges, allowing the right swing of the zigzag to extend just beyond the circle edge.
Layer the pieced mat top with the red backing, right sides together, on top of the batting. Carefully pin around the mat through all layers. Stitch around the mat, leaving a section open for turning. Clip the corners and grade the seam allowances. Turn the mat right-side-out; slipstitch the opening closed.
To machine quilt the checkerboard section, pin through all layers around the checkerboard outer seams. Thread the machine needle with white thread and the bobbin with red thread. Carefully stitch through all layers, turning at the corners.
