Use old or new pillowcases to make simple, sassy skirts.
pillowcase skirt

Vintage pillowcases, or any pillowcase, can be made into a simple skirt in very little time. Have a party with your friends and see how many unique looks you can create.
If you find an old pillowcase that's stained and has yellowed over time, you can whiten it by soaking it in a solution made with Vintage Soak. See "Sources" on page 3 of this column for ordering information. Just follow the directions on the package.

MATERIALS
  • Standard size pillowcase
  • Enough 1/2 -wide elastic to comfortably fit around the waist, plus 2"
  • Matching all-purpose thread
  • Fabric marker
  • Seam sealant (optional)
  • Coordinating fabric (optional)

Pillowcases usually come in pairs and measure 21" to 22" across. Each one will make a skirt that will comfortably fit up to a 38" hip. Measure your hips at the widest area below your waist to determine if one pillowcase is wide enough to go around your body. If your hips are larger than 38", sew two cases together, or simply add a coordinating panel down each side (1). Release the stitching at the pillowcase short end and cut along the side folds to separate the front and back. Apply seam sealant to the crocheted border cut edges. Insert panels wide enough to give a total measure at least 4" larger than your hip measurement. Hem the panel lower edges even with the pillowcase.
Add panels to sides to accomodate larger hips.
