Start Simple

Sewing reversible clothing doesn't take much more time than sewing a single-layer garment with a lining or facings. Successful sewing relies on design simplicity and wise fabric choices. For the best results, choose simple, body-skimming dresses and separates, rather than more fitted and detailed styles. Sew a reversible jumper, sleeveless top and skirt--for a total of six garments with multiple mix-and-match possibilities.

• For quicker construction, use a pattern that's been fitted and sewn before.
  
• An easy-fitting, pull-on jumper with a modest scoop neckline, no waistline seam and lowered armholes is a perfect place to begin. Wear it as a sundress or layer it over a simple top. Check the armhole so it's not too high to prevent wearing something underneath, nor so low that it exposes undergarments. Wear a tank top in a contrasting color underneath, allowing it to show for interesting contrast, or wear a longer shirt over the jumper, cinching it with a soft belt to create a skirt and blouse look.
  
  
• For the jumper, choose a solid color polyester georgette for one side and a coordinating print for the other to create a dressy and casual dress in one. Or, choose two complementary prints- they'll show through each other, creating an interesting background texture for each side of the garment.
  
  
• Avoid wrinkles by choosing lightweight knits and woven polyesters such as georgette or similarly textured fabrics that have wash-and-wear, wrinkle-free qualities.
  
  
• Choose two fabrics that are similar in fiber content, weight and construction. Two lightweight knits or two lightweight wovens will work together, but don't mix a knit and a woven.
  
  
• Accurate cutting is key to success. Avoid the temptation of layering the two fabrics together and cutting both garments at once. Cutting them individually guarantees they'll be the same size and shape.
