Sleeveless Top
A reversible, sleeveless top is versatile and easy to sew. Combine it with a skirt and a simple cardigan jacket for a variety of outfits. Choose two solid, coordinating colors, or a solid and a coordinating print for maximum mix-and-match possibilities. Washable, lightweight knits with a bit of Lycra for shape retention and drape work well.
Construct the reversible top following the same method as for the jumper-so the lower hemmed edges hang free of each other. Again, the pattern must have a center back seam. The top can also be constructed with the following method so the lower edges are finished together.
- Alter the pattern by reducing the hem allowance to a 5/8" seam allowance at the front and back lower edges.
- If interfacing is desired at the neckline and armholes, cut them from a very lightweight fusible knit or weft-insertion interfacing and apply to the front and back wrong sides of one garment.
- Construct the top following the first five steps of the sleeveless jumper.
- With right sides together, stitch one continuous seam at the center back and only one side seam.
- Serge- or zigzag-finish the seam allowance edges together. Press the seam to one side at the center back and toward the back at the side seam.
- With right sides together, stitch the lower edges together, from side seam to side seam. When doing this, the entire garment will be bunched up inside both layers of the top. Trim the seam allowance to 1/4". Working on a sleeve board, press the seam open. Turn right side out and press the edge. Everything should now be finished except one side seam (5).
- With right sides together, and matching the underarm seams and lower edge seams, stitch as much of the side seam as possible. Begin above the underarm seam, sew a short distance and readjust and then sew some more, ending past the lower edge seam. With patience, most of this seam can be sewn, leaving only a small opening in one layer (6). Press the seam as well as possible toward the garment back; finish pressing from the right side.
- Stitch the opening edges closed with a draw stitch (7).
- Edgestitch and/or topstitch the armhole, neckline and lower edges.
