What kid doesn't get a little wild now and then? Let the half-pints show off their animal instincts on Halloween with a zebra costume fit for the urban jungle.
Materials
White sweatshirt and sweatpants
White baseball hat
Thick black yarn
Black fabric paint
Sponge brush
1/8 yard of black felt
2"-wide masking tape
Cutting & Construction
Using the masking tape, place strips horizontally around the sweatshirt and pants to create the zebra stripes. Note: Angle the stripes down at the center front and center back (3).
In the unmasked areas paint black stripes to create the zebra's coat. Set aside to dry.
Paint random stripes on the hat; set aside to dry.
To create the mane, measure the distance from the top of the child's head to the upper back. Cut the felt strip to fit. Note: Trim the felt long edges so the strip is about 4" wide. Adjust according to the child's size.
Wrap the black yam around a 6"-wide cardboard piece to make yarn loops. Remove the yarn from the cardboard and zigzag stitch one end of the loops to the felt strip (4). Cut the loops at the lower edge so they flow freely. Repeat until the felt is completely covered. Make the loops at the cap top shorter and thicker to create bangs. Fluff the bangs loosely.
Attach the mane to the hat by hand or machine tacking at the edges. Note: The hat is worn backwards.
Cut two 2" felt squares. Fold them into a triangle to form the ears. Hand tack at the hat top on either side of the mane (5).
