Wire Attire

Button Tips

  • Decide what shape you're trying to create before starting a button. Then try to be consistent for each button made for the garment.

  • Before making the garment buttonholes make samples on scraps of the garment fabric to determine the correct size for the wire button For the buttonhole length, measure around the button with a tape measure and then divide by two. Adjust if necessary.

  • These buttons work well with many different fabrics, although they may catch on very textured fabrics.

  • If you're making a very large button, the buttonhole may need more stabilization than usual. Attach a heavier than normal interfacing scrap (or two layers of interfacing) on the garment wrong side before constructing the buttonhole.

  • Consider using wire buttons as decorative rather than functioning buttons. Sew them on top of uncut buttonholes and use an alternate closure method (like snaps) underneath to actually secure the garment.
