Use home dec grommet tape for projects other than curtains.

Continued From Page 1
This shower curtain uses one length of grommet tape to combine the three curtain layers: liner, base fabric and sheer overlay. For the sheer overlay, pick an embroidered sheer or a sheer in a color contrasting to the base fabric for an interesting combination. If you don't want to attach the vinyl/plastic liner permanently to the shower curtain, use a double shower curtain rod. Or attach a separate length of grommet tape and grommets to the upper edge of the shower curtain liner and line them up with the grommets on the other layer.

Shower Curtain

Materials
  • 4 1/8 yards of sheer polyester fabric for shower curtain overlay
  • 4 1/8 yards of coordinating lightweight fabric for a shower curtain base
  • 70"W x 72"H shower curtain liner
  • One package each of hookless Quik-Tach Tape and Flex-On Loops. Note: see sources for availabilty
  • Polyester sewing thread. Note: Use 100% polyester thread to help prevent the thread from mildewing.

  • To remove the length added by the grommet tape sewn to the upper edge of the shower curtain, trim 3 3/4" from the shower curtain liner upper edge.

  • Cut three panels each from the sheer fabric and base fabric: two 20"x72 1/4" side panels and one 37 1/2"x72 1/4" center panel.

  • Use a French seam to sew the sheer side panels to either side of the center panel. Repeat for the base fabric.
French seam: with wrong sides together, sew a 1/2" seam. Press the seam open and trim the seam allowances to 1/4". Fold the fabric right sides together over the seam allowances and stitch with a 3/8" seam.

  • On the sheer curtain lower edge, press under 2" twice and stitch next to the inner fold. Press each side under 1" twice and stitch. Repeat to hem the sides then lower edge of the base fabric curtain.

  • Right sides up, layer the liner, base fabric curtain and sheer fabric on a large flat surface. Align and baste the upper edges of all three curtains together.

  • Measure 70 1/2" from one finished end of the grommet tape and trim. Enclose the raw edges of all three curtain layers in the seam allowances at the tape lower edge and topstitch according to the manufacturer's instructions, turning in the raw edges at the unfinished tape end.

  • Snap on the grommets according to the manufacturer's directions and thread onto a shower rod.
