- When purchasing 30-weight topstitching thread, remember it
contains less yardage per spool than lighter weight all-purpose thread.
- Use a topstitching needle available in sizes 80/12, 90/14 and
100/16. Most topstitching needles have a large elongated eye, scarf and deeper front
groove to allow the heavier thread to slip easily through the needle eye during the stitch
formation.
- A thread lubricant often will help the thread slide through the
needle eye and reduce fraying and breaking. Check your machine manufacturer's instructions
for using these products.
- Most readily available topstitching thread is polyester, so pair
it with all-purpose polyester thread in the bobbin.
- If you can't find the color of topstitching thread you need,
substitute two strands of all-purpose thread through the needle eye.
- Topstitching thread requires a longer stitch length and sometimes
a looser tension setting. Use a stabilizer with some long stitch patterns to counteract
puckering.
- Always stitch a test sample before beginning your project.
