Front-zip Pants With Pockets

This type of front stay is actually a pocket extension that's caught in the center front seam. Use it on pants or shorts with a fly-front zipper and side-seam or slant pockets.

  • Cut out the pants according to the pattern guidesheet, cutting only two pockets instead of four from the fashion fabric.

  • To make a pattern for the stay, pin out the darts or pleats in the pants front pattern, then position the pocket pattern in place on the pants front pattern. Draw a gentle curve extending from the pocket lower edge to 1/4" to 1/2" below the zipper opening along the center front line (2).

Extend pocket in gentle curve to pant pattern center front.

  • Trace and cut the front stay pattern from pattern tracing cloth (3). Cut two from the stay fabric. Serge or zigzag the lower edge of each stay.

    Front Stay Pattern

  • Sew the darts or tucks in the pants front. With right sides together, sew the front stays to the pants pocket edges (4).

Stitch front stay to pants pocket edge.

  • Trim the seams and turn the front stays to the inside, rolling the pants front slightly to the wrong side. Press and edgestitch along the pocket edge (5).

    Edgestitch along pocket edge.

  • If your pattern has a separate side front that should be stitched to a pocket lining, do that now.

  • Place the pants side front/pocket piece right side down over the front stay. Pin and stitch the edge of the pocket to the stay only, keeping the pants front free of the stitching (6).

    Stitch side front/pocket to front

  • Machine baste each stay's front edge to the pants center front (7), then complete the pants construction following the pattern guidesheet.

Baste front stay to pants center front.

Note: Because those of us with protruding tummies also often have wide hips, you may find it more flattering to avoid side pockets. In that case, make a front stay on fly-front zipper pants by simply making a stay pattern like in "Back- or Side-zip Pants" above. Baste the stay to the pants pattern at the side seams, waistline and center front edge, then construct the pants according to the pattern guidesheet.
