From Our January 2004 Issue

My child has earned letters for excelling in sports and I want to know if I should sew them to his clothes by hand or machine.

I called a local sports outlet for their recommendation, since they attach these everyday. The best and easiest way to apply the letters is with your machine. Use a 3 mm straight stitch and a zipper foot so you can stitch on the flat edge, close to the raised portion around the perimeter. Adjust your needle position to allow the stitching to be placed right along the edge, without crushing the raised design area. If you plan on removing the letters someday, use a longer basting stitch, which will be easier to remove.
