What is the correct way to apply elastic to the leg opening of a swimsuit?
Sarah M.,

Swimsuit leg openings are slightly different than other elastic applications. The elastic is not applied evenly around the leg. It must be stretched more in the back to hug the leg properly.
Cut the elastic according to the chart in the pattern instructions. Or, if no chart is available, measure the finished circumference of the leg opening on the pattern, noting the measurements for the front and the back. Subtract 2"and cut elastic this length.
Measure and mark the front leg length on the elastic. Divide the two sections of elastic in half and mark (Figure 1).

Butt the ends of the elastic together or overlap 1/4" and zigzag securely.
Divide the swimsuit front and back leg openings in half and mark. Matching the elastic joining to the crotch seam, pin the elastic to the leg opening, matching the markings to the side seam and the halfmarks (Figure 2).

Serge or zigzag the elastic edge to the swimsuit, stretching the elastic between the pins (Figure 3).

Fold the elastic to the inside. Zigzag or straight stitch over the previous stitching, stretching as you sew (Figure 4).
