What is the best type of lining to use in summer garments, especially my linen dresses?

Look for lightweight, natural fibers that breathe such as cottons and silks. Avoid polyester as it doesn't breathe well at all, making the garment hot and sticky.

  • For a soft and very lightweight option, choose cotton batiste-avoid any blends with polyester. Cotton voile is another choice it's crisper than batiste, so it will add some body to wrinkle-prone linens.

  • China silk is also very lightweight and breathes well. Silk organza will also work. It doesn't drape as well and will add some weight; it's a good choice for fitted garments.

Preshrinking is recommended for all of the above fabrics. Use tepid water with a mild soap; rinse and air-dry. Press fabric while it's still damp. To sew, use fine needle such as a size 65/9 or 70/10. Hold the fabric taut in front and back of the presser foot as you stitch to avoid puckers.
