I've threaded my machine correctly but the thread keeps breaking. What can be causing this?

There are a variety of reasons for thread breaks.

  • First clean the lint and fibers out of your machine using a small soft brush. Lint can impede the thread, causing bad stitch formation, and possibly breaking the thread.

  • Refer to your manual and make sure the needle is inserted correctly with the flat portion facing in the correct direction and the shaft pushed all the way into its hole. A damaged needle can rub on other parts of the machine, fraying and snapping the thread. Change your needle and try again.

  • The thread tension may be too tight. Sew a test swatch and compare it to figures 5 through 7 (in Bobbin Tension).

  • If the thread is wound on the bobbin unevenly, the needle thread will bring it up incorrectly, jamming the thread and causing it to break.

  • Check for snags on the needle plate or bobbin hook-they can snag the thread. Remove burrs on the needle plate with an emery cloth (not sandpaper). I recommend having a sewing machine technician fix a burr on the bobbin hook.
