Use buttonhole twist, pearl cotton or regular sewing thread doubled or quadrupled for a strong belt loop. Attach the thread end to the upper point of the belt loop position, leaving a 14" length on the garment right side. With your fingers, make a loop and then pull the thread through to form the next loop. Pull the threads of the second loop to tighten the first loop, positioning the first "chain" next to the fabric surface (1).
Keep repeating this process until the chain is the desired length. Draw the remaining thread through the final loop and use the end to secure the chain at the belt loop lower position. Another method is to hand sew several long stitches back and forth on the garment right side between the loop's upper and lower points. Then cover the long threads with buttonhole stitches (2).
These techniques are also useful for making a button loop for a back neck closure or to create a thread eye for a metal hook. |
