These pillows are very quick and easy to make and would make great gifts too. You'll need 1/3 yard of fabric (the pillow shown was made from fleece) and a 5-pound bag of rice for the filling. Enlarge the pattern 200% on a copy machine and cut two on the fold (1). (To obtain accurate printing results, click the image for the PDF format file. The red markings on the image below, are the print measurements, before enlarging, to obtain accurate results. The PDF file should also print at 2 5/8".)

Cut two on fold

  • Pin the two pillows right sides together and stitch with a 1/2" seam around the outside, leaving a 3" opening on the outside edge at the back neck. Stitch again 1/16" away from the first stitching; clip the inside curve to the stitching (2).
    Sew, leaving an opening

  • Turn the pillow right side out and fill it with a little more than half of a bag of rice. It's helpful to place the pillow in a mixing bowl to help hold it and prevent the rice from spilling all over.
  • Turn in the opening edges and, using a doubled thread, securely hand stitch the opening closed.
  • Heat in the microwave for 1 1/2 to 2 minutes or until the desired temperature and enjoy.

You can also put the pillow in the freezer for a cold pack. Avoid getting the neck pillow wet, since the rice will mold.
