What can I do to keep inseam pockets on pants and skirts from flipping to the back?
Edna K.,
Epworth, GA

You can fix the pocket by simply reshaping the pattern so the upper edge can be caught in the waistband stitching.
  • Position the pocket pattern on the garment front pattern piece matching the placement notches.
  • Place pattern tracing cloth over the patterns and draw a new pocket pattern extending the pocket upper edge into the waistline seam (3). Transfer the pattern notches and circles to the new pattern.

  • Cut out and mark the garment pieces according to the guidesheet, substituting the new pocket pattern.
  • With right sides together, stitch the pockets to the side seams as directed in the pattern, stitching with a 3/8" seam (4). Press the seam allowances toward the pockets.

  • Pin the garment fronts and backs together, matching the notches and circles. Sew the side seams from the lower edge to the circle and stitch around the pocket. Stitch the upper side seam from the circle to the waistline edge (5).
    Sew side and pocket seams.

  • Clip the back seam allowance to the stitching at the lower circle and press the seam allowances open.
  • Press the pocket to the front and baste the pocket upper edge to the front waistline (6).
Baste upper edge to garment front.

  • Attach the waistband as directed in the pattern guidesheet.
