Yoga

A 5,000-year-old tradition alleviates the aches and pains of being at a sewing machine all day, which could be just what you need for a better you this New Year.

YOGA MEANS "UNION" IN SANSKRIT. When yoga is practiced, movement and breath are united to create a relaxed body and a clear mind. Yoga's deep breathing and gentle stretches relieve tense shoulders, a stiff neck and an aching lower back, and help circulation in the legs.

"Sewing Yoga" is a series of yoga postures combined with deep breathing designed to target the aches and pains associated with sewing. The postures are gentle enough that even the most novice yogi can do them. The entire program can be completed in a half hour and many of the postures can be done while sitting at your sewing chair.

Prepare

1. Work within your limits. Listen to your body and stop if something feels wrong. The objective is to feel better after you finish the program.

2. Find a clean, quiet and comfortable place to begin your yoga practice. Take off your shoes and play soothing music.

3. To avoid injury, never force any posture.

4. Check with a qualified medical practitioner before beginning any exercise program.

5. Drink at least eight glasses of water a day. Keeping the body hydrated helps prevent muscle and joint aches.

6. Take a few minutes every hour in the day to sit up straight, breathe and stretch.

7. Make sure your sewing-machine table and chair are ergonomically correct.
