Office Space

Boxing Match, continued

From both fabrics, cut two 9 1/2"x12" rectangles (top and bottom), two 8"x12" rectangles (long sides), two 8"x9 1/2" rectangles (short sides), two 2 1/2"x9 1/2" rectangles (lid short sides) and two 2 1/2"x12" rectangles (lid long sides). From the interfacing, cut two 7"x11" rectangles (long sides), two 7"x8 1/2" rectangles (short sides), two 1 1/2"x8 1/2" rectangles (lid short sides) and two 1 1/2"x11" rectangles (lid long sides). Leave the remaining two 8 1/2"x11" rectangles uncut (lid and bottom).

Center one 8 1/2"x11" interfacing rectangle over one 9 1/2"x12" fashion-fabric rectangle wrong side. Fuse the interfacing to the fabric, following the manufacturer's instructions. Center one 9 1/2"x12" lining fabric rectangle over the interfacing, with the fabric wrong sides facing. Fuse the lining to the interfacing.

Repeat to fuse each interfacing rectangle to each corresponding fabric and lining rectangle.

Cut the 3/8"-wide ribbon into two 2"-long pieces and two 3"-long pieces. Position the short ribbons over the vinyl short edges, aligning the outer edges; tape the ribbon in place. Stitch the ribbon inner edges; remove the tape. Position the long ribbons over the vinyl long edges, aligning the outer edges; tape the ribbon in place. Stitch the ribbon inner edges; remove the tape. Stitch one long ribbon outer edge (now referred to as the pocket upper edge). Apply seam sealant to the ribbon ends if desired.

Center the pocket over one short-side piece right side, 2 1/2" up from one short edge; tape in place. Stitch the pocket short sides and lower edge, leaving the upper edge free (1).

Position each grommet 1 1/2" above and 1/4" away from each pocket upper-edge corner. Mark the grommet center, and then set aside the grommet. Punch a small hole through the fabrics and interfacing at each mark using an awl or small scissor point. Insert each grommet following the manufacturer's instructions.

With right sides facing, stitch one long edge of the bottom and one long-side piece. Use 1/2" seam allowances and stitch up to, but not through, the interfacing edge. Repeat to stitch the remaining long-side piece to the opposite bottom long edge.

Right sides together, stitch one shortside- piece short edge to one bottom short edge. Begin and end sewing 1/2" from each short-side-piece raw end. Stitch up to, but not through, the interfacing edge. Repeat to stitch the remaining short-side piece to the opposite bottom short edge.

Right sides together, stitch one long-side short edge to one short-side long edge. Stop sewing 1/2" from the corner. Repeat to stitch each side of the box.

Zigzag-finish the seams, and then turn the box right side out. Steam the box from the wrong side to shape it, carefully avoiding the vinyl.

Repeat the process to create the lid: Right sides together, stitch the lid long side lower edges to the lid long edges and the lid short-side lower edges to the lid short edges. Box the lid by stitching the long-side short edges to the short-side short edges. Zigzag-finish the seams, and then turn the lid right side out. Steam the lid to shape it.

Fold the box upper-edge (fabrics only) 1/2" toward the wrong side; press.

Cut a length of bias tape to fit the box upper edge plus 3". Cut another length of bias tape to fit the lid lower edge plus 3".

Fold one binding short raw edge 1/4" toward the wrong side; press. Wrap one bias-binding length around the box upper edge, leaving the raw edge at the box back. Encase the box upper edge with the bias binding; pin in place. Fold in the binding raw edge at the join. Position the folded end over the binding raw edge to conceal it; pin (2). Carefully stitch the binding long edges through all layers to encase the box upper edge, crushing the box if needed to maneuver it under the machine. Repeat to bind the lid lower edge. Hand stitch both binding short ends at the fold.

Resteam the box and lid from the wrong sides to shape them. Avoid ironing over the vinyl right side so it doesn't melt. Print a label for the box on a computer. Cut the label to fit the pocket; insert the label into the pocket.

Thread the 2"-wide ribbon through one grommet. Knot the ribbon end at the box wrong side. Thread the opposite ribbon end through the other grommet; knot. Apply seam sealant to the ribbon ends if desired.
