At Home:
Jewelry Keeper

By Dianne H. Warner

Transform ready-made place mats into handy jewelry travel cases.

MATERIALS

  • Ready-made reversible place mat, approximately 12"x17"
  • 1 yard of snap tape
  • 12" of 3/8"-wide grosgrain ribbon
  • 2 yards of 5/8"-wide grosgrain ribbon

Construction

Thread the machine needle with thread to match the snap tape and bobbin thread to match the place mat side that will be the outside of the jewelry holder.

Cut the 5/8"-wide ribbon into two equal lengths and the 3/8"-wide ribbon into three equal lengths.

Cut the snap tape into three 11" lengths with the snaps centered along the length and with just fabric at either end. Partially unsnap one end of each length. Working on the unsnapped end, turn under the male (prong) tape 3/8" and baste. On the same end of the female (socket) tape, encase the end by folding one 3/8" ribbon piece over the end; stitch to secure. Trim the ribbon ends on the diagonal (1). Repeat with the remaining tape sections.
