With the tapes still partially snapped and with the female portion on top, position a strip 1 1/2" from each place mat short end and centered between the place mat sides. Center the remaining strip between the two end strips (2). (If the place mat has scalloped or patterned edges, place the tape 1 1/2" in from the innermost points.)
For each strip, treat both tape sections as one and turn under the unfinished end 1/2"; pin in place, catching only the male underlayer and the turned under end. Unsnap the tape and fold the female section back out of the way. Stitch both ends of the male tape with a short, medium-wide zigzag. Topstitch close to both lengthwise edges of the tape using a zipper foot to allow stitching close to the snaps (3).
Flip the place mat over. Center a 5/8"- wide ribbon over the place mat, approximately 3" from each short end, being sure the tape doesn't overlap the snap tape on the other side; pin in place. With needle thread to match the ribbon, and bobbin thread to match the place mat reverse side, edgestitch 3" of the ribbons to the place mat beginning 1 1/2" from the place mat edge and securing a 3" section. Leave the remainder of the ribbon loose to permit the place mat to be rolled up and tied (4).
Add jewelry and snap the tape in place--roll up the jewelry case, tie the ribbons and you're set to go.
