Ribbonwork Revisited

Embellished Scarf

MATERIALS

  • Purchased scarf. (Directions and yardages given are to embellish a 56"x 9" fringed silk chiffon scarf.)
  • 20" of 2 1/2"-wide embroidered fine net lace
  • 14" of 1 1/4" -wide pink silk ribbon
  • 28" of 1"-wide pink-edged cream bias-cut silk ribbon
  • 18" of 3/8" -wide cream double-faced silk ribbon
  • 18" of 1/4" -wide lavender and pink ruffle-edge ribbon
  • 20" of green-ribbon leaf trim
  • Four pearl buttons
  • 44 gold seed beads
  • 16 pearl seed beads
  • Twisted beading thread or quilting thread
  • Milliner needle size #10

The following instructions apply to one end of the scarf. Repeat the instructions to embellish the opposite end.

Thread a needle with a single strand of beading or quilting thread. When creating ribbonwork flowers, anchor the gathering thread in the ribbon with three or four backstitches. A conventional knot won't hold the gathering and will pull out of the ribbon.

Cut a length of embroidered lace 1/4" longer than the scarf width, centering or placing any scallops as desired. Fold the lace cut edges under 1/8", position the lace so the scalloped edge just covers the scarf 's fringing knots, then tack the lace to the scarf with hand stitches (1).
