Alter a T
Rockin' Rainbow

By Suzie Shinseki

Materials

  • Fabric paint: pearl heather (such as Tulip Dimensional Fabric Paint)
  • Fabric dye spray: petunia (such as Tulip Cool Color Spray)
  • Several small round gems (such as Tulip Glam-It-Up! Cabochons)
  • 1 white T-shirt
  • 2 yards of pink or purple trim
  • Air-soluble marking pen
  • Matching all-purpose thread
  • Spray bottle
For best results, please read all instructions before beginning this project. Refer to the photo for color and design placement.

Before painting, prewash the T-shirt to remove the sizing. Don't use fabric softener. Shake paint bottles well.

Instructions

1. With an air-soluble marking pen, draw cutting guidelines on the T-shirt. Following the guidelines, cut off the sleeves and shirt lower edge: Cut off the neck ribbing and trim it to a V. Cut 1 1/2" to 2" down from the shoulders on both the shirt front and back where they're no longer joined (4).

2. Fold all raw edges 1/4" to the wrong side and press; stitch.

3. Lay the shirt on a protected surface. Spray the fabric dye vertically from the shirt lower edge to the shirt upper edge. Spray a heavier coat at the lower edge and gradate to a light coat at the upper edge. Repeat for the opposite side. Hang the shirt to dry.

4. Cut eight 6" trim strips. Evenly space four strip ends to the front shoulder upper edge; stitch to secure. Stitch the trim raw ends to the back shoulder upper edge to create a strap. Repeat for the other strap.

5. Stitch the trim along the shoulder edge, around the entire neckline and around the hemline.

6. Create a bow with the trim and knot the ends. Hand stitch the bow to the base of the neckline.

7. Make four dots with fabric paint under each trim strap (5). Carefully position a gem in each dot center. Repeat to embellish the remaining strap and bow center. Let the paint dry.
