This Is Your Life

Photo Pointers

Select eight photos that depict your graduate's life. These can include photos at birth through grade, middle, high school and college, leading up to the big cap-and-gown day. Or, choose photos of siblings, pets, friends or sports teams. Don't forget shots of the first day of school, the prized lunch box or the annual school play.

Look for photos with the same orientation (vertical or horizontal) that can be cropped to a similar size. If you have a graphics program, consider combining multiple related photos into a single block.

Determine the finished quilt block size– the featured quilt showcases 7"-square photos. Keep in mind that most printers use 8 1/2"x11" paper/fabric and you need at least a 1/4" seam allowance on each side of the photo print.

Scan the photos into your computer. Use a simple graphics program to change the size, maintaining the original proportions. Or crop the photo to delete peripherals, backgrounds, etc.

Optional: Add special effects or make minor "repairs" to the photos. Common alterations include fixing red eyes, removing dust or scratches (especially for older photos), adjusting brightness or contrast, or adding borders and soft edges to the photos.

If you don't own a scanner, take the prints or negatives to a photo store and ask them to put the iamges on a CD in the size needed. Many photo stores will also make minor corrections before saving the images.

When satisfied with the photo selection and alterations, save the corrected photos on the computer and rename them. Print the photos on paper to double-check the sizing, page placement and quality.
