Fresh Perspective

By Debra Gash

Create fun fabric bowls and vessels by shaping the heated bowl over a form. The secret is to use a foam sheet between the layers.

MATERIALS

  • Two sheets of heat-sensitive Softsculpt thin foam or one 12"x18"sheet of 2 mm craft foam
  • 1/3 yard or two fat quarters of light- to mediumweight fabric (Avoid nylon and acetates as the fabrics need to tolerate a 300 F oven.)
  • Compass or other circle-making template
  • Glass, metal or plastic form for shaping
  • All-purpose thread to match fabric
  • Contrasting and/or decorative threads (optional)
  • Clear monofilament thread (optional)
  • Heat-tolerant embellishments (lengths of fiber, lace, painted organza or other sheer fabrics, glass beads)
  • Polyester tulle or netting to match fabric (optional)

Fabric-Foam Sandwich

For each bowl layer, cut one circle from the foam.

An 11"-diameter bowl will fit on the Softsculpt if you abut two sheets and zigzag the lengthwise edges together. Use light-colored or invisible thread and a wide zigzag stitch.

A 12" circle can be cut from each sheet of craft foam.

The bowl form doesn't have to be a perfect circle--an irregular wavy edge makes an interesting bowl.

Cut two pieces of fabric at least 1" larger than the foam shape.
