DIY Duvets

Button Duvet

All seams are 1/2" unless otherwise noted.

The featured duvet cover was made for a queen-size comforter using 59"- wide fabric. Preshrink all fabrics prior to construction.

MATERIALS

  • Fabric (according to duvet dimensions)
  • Backing fabric (according to duvet dimensions)
  • Six buttons (at least 1 1/2" diameter)
  • Matching all-purpose thread

Cut the backing fabric to the duvet dimensions (a and b on "Duvet Dimensions" chart). If necessary, piece together fabric widths to achieve the desired dimensions.

Cut two fabric panels to the duvet width, plus 3". Cut one panel to measure two thirds of the duvet length plus 7" (upper panel) and cut one panel to measure one third of the duvet length plus 7" (lower panel). Or piece together fabric to achieve the desired dimensions.

Fold the upper panel selvage edge 6" toward the wrong side and press. Stitch close to the selvage edge. Stitch six horizontal buttonholes equidistant from each other 1" from the folded edge (3).

Zigzag-finish one long edge of the lower panel. Place the upper panel buttonhole edge over the lower panel zigzagged edge. (Make sure the lower panel upper edge extends beyond the buttonholes.) Pin the overlapped edges in place; stitch (4). Using the buttonholes as a guide, pin-mark the button placements on the lower panel right side. Hand stitch the buttons in place and button through the buttonholes.

Right sides facing, place the backing over the joined fabric panels. Align all corners and pin the perimeter; stitch.

Unbutton the buttons and turn the duvet right side out through the button opening; press. Topstitch the duvet perimeter close to the edge. Insert the comforter, matching the corners, and button the cover to close.

Coordinate your bedroom décor. Freehand draw a design similar to your duvet fabric motif and copy it onto an artist's canvas. Paint the canvas and let dry. Hang the painting over your bed for a delightful designer detail.
