Making Toggles

Peel off the protective paper on one side of the double-sided fusible web and press it to the wrong side of the faux suede. Mark ten 1 1/2" x 1 1/8" rectangles on the paper backing.

Mark both grainlines as shown. This will ensure that all pieces cut from napped fabric are kept on the same grain. Mark and cut 10 toggle patches, shaping the outside edges (3).

Cut five 2 1/2" lengths of cording. Thread a length of cording through each antler button. With the cording ends even, position them just in from one toggle-patch, short straight edge and machine baste in place (4). Repeat to add toggles to the remaining four patches with matching grainlines.

Cut five 3 1/2" lengths of cording for the loops on the jacket right front. Machine-baste the cording ends to the remaining toggle patches in the same manner.

Remove the fusible-web paper backing, and position the prepared toggles on the coat left front, directly over the button placement points, and with the toggle patches 1 1/2" from the center-front edge (5).

Position the loops on the right front of the garment at each buttonhole placement point 1 1/2" from the center-front edge. The antler button should sit directly on the garment center-front line. The loops should extend just past the center-front line.

Check the spacing and make sure the closures line up correctly when looped together; make adjustments as necessary. Cover the toggle patches with a press cloth and gently fuse in place. Edgestitch around the faux suede patches.
