On the Flip Side

Thread

Select a thread color that matches or coordinates with both fabrics. Or use a color in the needle that matches one fabric and another color in the bobbin to match the other fabric.

If using two thread colors, adjust the tension so the thread doesn't show on the opposite side.

Finishing Necklines & Armholes by Machine

This is a great technique for finishing a sleeveless garment. It eliminates handwork and neatly finishes both sides of the garment.

With right sides together and shoulder seams matching, pin the neck edges of both fabrics together. Stitch, trim and clip the seam allowance. Press open the seam allowance with the iron tip (1). Turn the garment right side out and press the neck edge so neither side shows on the opposite side.

Spread the top out flat with the right side of Fabric 1 facing up. Smooth the layers in place. The armhole and side seams of both layers must match exactly for the next few steps. If one layer is larger than the other, trim any uneven edges so both tops are the same size and shape (2).

Spread open one shoulder seam so the right sides of both fabrics are facing up (3). Place the remaining (unopened) shoulder over the first one (4).

With right sides together, bring the open shoulder seams up and around, creating a tunnel and encasing the other shoulder (5). Starting at the shoulder seam, match and pin the armholes together keeping the cut edges even. Make sure the encased shoulder isn't caught in the pinning (6).

Stitch, trim, clip and press the seam to set the stitches. Turn to the right side by pulling the garment through the shoulder. It may appear tangled, but keep pulling. Press.

Repeat the same process on the remaining armhole.

With right sides together, pin the side seams matching the Fabric-1 front to the Fabric-1 back and the Fabric-2 front to the Fabric-2 back. Make sure the underarm seams match. Stitch a continuous seam from one hem edge to the other; backstitch at each dot. Press open the seam (7).
