Learn to sew Michael Miller's Bundle Up nonravel bouclé sweater knit fabric. The soft, comfortable knit is available in trend-setting colors, such as cocoa, sky, candy, kiwi and eggshell. Create a chic shrug and enhance it with yarn trim for a cozy addition to your winter wardrobe.
BUNDLE UP SWEATER KNIT is great for easily constructed patterns. The fabric's 54" width and generous stretch make it perfect for larger-size garments, providing a comfortable fit and flattering drape. The dimensional fabric texture lends itself to pairing with textured thread, plush complementary fabrics or silken fabrics for dramatic contrast. Bundle Up doesn't shrink and is 100% polyester, assuring colorfastness.
Edge Finishes
Use ribbing to finish necklines, sleeves and hems for a fetching sweater. To embellish the ribbing, serge decorative thread to the folded edge. For a glitzy look, use metallic thread and a rolled hem stitch. Stretch the ribbing slightly as you sew for more frills.
Knit a ribbed turtleneck collar and cuffs and attach them to the neckline and sleeves. Use a multicolor variegated yarn for added appeal.
Crocheted cuffs are delicate hem finishes (1). Crocheted cuffs don't have much stretch so a wide cuff and/or loose cowl collar work well. Bundle Up's open weave easily accommodates crochet hooks. Make the first row of chainstitches loose to allow ease for subsequent rows of crochet stitches. Add or skip a stitch to keep the hem edge smooth.
Use fusible hem tape for a subtle edge finish. Serge-finish the edges or leave them raw–they won't fray. Look for hem tape with a pressure-sensitive temporary hold that allows you to stick everything in place, and then press for a permanent bond. Test on a fabric scrap and use a press cloth.
Some garment seams need to be stabilized. A bias-cut organdy strip stabilizes while giving a soft ease. For stress areas, such as shoulder seams, use a non-stretch lightweight fabric tape.
Clear elastic is an edging option that provides stabilization with some give. If the seam is in an exposed area, cover the elastic with trim.
Add a flirty chiffon flounce to sleeves, a neckline or shrug opening. Or use wide Venetian lace, rayon fringe or an accordion-pleated organza trim.
Apply textured yarn trim to fabric edges. Turn the fabric edge and stitch the trim in place using clear polyester or matching thread.
