Fringe Benefits

By Laura Rintala and Marla Stefanelli

These handbags go together in a jiffy, and a knitted fur trim gives them pettable appeal. As an option, purchase a cute purse and simply add the knitted band.

MATERIALS

  • 1/4 yard each of purse and lining fabric
  • 1/4 yard of fusible interfacing
  • Faux-fur type yarn in chosen color
  • One pair #8 (4 mm) knitting needles
All seams are 1/4" unless otherwise indicated.

On pattern-tracing cloth, trace the three purse pattern pieces and coin purse flap pattern.

From the purse fabric cut two purse bodies and two 2 1/2" x 14" strips for the handles. From the lining fabric, cut two purse lining pieces and one pocket piece. From interfacing, cut two purse bodies and two 2 1/4" x 14" strips.

Right sides together, fold the pocket piece in half lengthwise. Stitch across the short ends. Turn right side out and press. Center the pocket on one lining piece, with the raw edges 2 1/2" from the lining lower edge; stitch (1).

Press the pocket up over the stitching, and edgestitch the short ends in place. Topstitch the pocket divider 2 1/2" from the pocket right edge. To add the optional pocket flap, see What's the Flap?

Fuse interfacing to each purse body piece and handle strip.

Right sides together and matching the notches, stitch each lining piece to a bag body piece along the notched edge. Press the seams toward the lining.
