Fringe Benefits

What's the Flap?

  • Make a quick flap for the larger side of the pocket. Cut two purse flaps from lining fabric. Right sides facing, stitch them together along the curved edge. Trim the seam using pinking shears.
  • Turn the flap right side out and press the opening edges inside. Position the flap just above the pocket, and edgestitch the flap in place.

Another Way to Handle It

  • If the idea of turning tubes turns you off, try this take on handsome handles.
  • Cut two 4" x 14" strips from purse fabric. Cut two 3 1/2" x 13 1/2" strips from fusible interfacing.
  • Center and fuse the interfacing to the wrong side of each handle strip. Press under each short end 1/4". Press each strip in half, wrong sides together. Open the fold, and press each long edge to the center fold. Fold again and topstitch each long edge.
  • Attach the straps as noted in figure 4.

The Lip of Luxury

Add a little frill at the purse upper edge with a simple knitted fur cuff. Cast 10 stitches onto size #8 knitting needles and knit back and forth until the strip measures 18". Bind off, leaving a long tail. Use the tail to whipstitch the short ends together. With all-purpose thread, whipstitch the cuff to the purse upper edge.
