Q&A

By Gena Bloemendaal

I'm trying to sew panné velvet but it stretches all over the place. I set the stitch length at 3 mm but the resulting stitches are tiny. Can you help me?

Panné velvet has a luxurious look, but it does tend to pucker when stitching. Before stitching, baste or double-baste the seams by hand using silk thread. Panné's nap is pressed in one direction; always stitch in the direction of the nap. If stitches are still small or tight, loosen the tension, and hold the fabric taut as you sew. When stitching panné velvet to another fabric, place the velvet on top. Use a roller or walking foot to help evenly feed the fabric. You can also try sandwiching the seam between two strips of tissue paper and then stitching through all layers. The tissue paper helps prevent the stitches from sinking into the pile.
