Q&A

How do you preshrink and press fabric made from cotton and Lycra? When I run yardage through the dryer, it seems to pucker.

Lycra, known more commonly as spandex, entered the sewing scene in 1958. Its durability and stretch make it a sensible choice for swimsuits and activewear. The fiber can stretch over 500% in length without breaking and recover to its original length. Lycra is now blended into numerous fabrics, even denim, to add extra give.
Though resistant to perspiration, body oils, sunlight and abrasion, Lycra is heat-sensitive when it comes to laundering. For best results, wash Lycra or Lycra-blends in cool or lukewarm water on a gentle cycle using mild detergent. Don't use chlorine bleach or any detergents with bleach derivatives. Tumble-dry on the lowest heat or air-only setting, or hang and allow to air dry. Use a warm iron with no steam to press the fabric, taking care not to stretch or push the fabric while pressing.
