Q&A | Altering Pants

By Linda Lee

I am slightly bowlegged and would like to know how to alter slacks to disguise this problem, especially slacks that are flared at the bottom.
Meryl

The following pattern alteration will work for any leg width, flared or straight. For bowed legs, pants need more length on the outside seam and less length on the inside seam to fit the leg curve. The solution is to lengthen the outside seamline and shorten the inside seamline.

Slash both the back and front pattern pieces from seam to seam about 2' below the crotch seam. Insert some pattern paper under the pattern. Spread the pattern at the side seam at least 1/2' and overlap the same amount at the inner leg seam. Tape the pattern in place (1).

The amount of spread depends on the degree of your bow legs. The more extreme the leg curve, the more you can spread the pattern.
