Serger Thread Catcher Tutorial & Pattern

Learn how to make a handy serger thread catcher to keep your sewing area neat and tidy using this free thread catcher pattern


  • 1/2 yard of mediumweight woven fabric
  • All-purpose thread


Use 1/2" seam allowances unless otherwise noted. 

Download the free serger thread catcher pattern. 

From the fabric, cut two pattern pieces on the fold. 

Align the two pattern pieces with right sides together. Stitch the perimeter, leaving a 3" opening along the short straight edge. 

Trim the seam allowances and clip the corners. Turn the thread catcher right side out through the opening, pushing out the corners and turning the opening edges 1/2" toward the wrong side; press. 

Edgestitch the thread catcher perimeter, closing the opening. 

Fold the thread catcher upward along the marked foldline, aligning one lower section edge with the long edge to form the bag; pin. Stitch the aligned edge using a scant 1/4" seam allowance. Repeat to stitch the remaining lower-section edge to the opposite long edge. 

Turn the bag section right side out; press. Place the upper section under the serger, aligning the bag with the serger cutting area.
